The football player is charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault. The Crown alleged the offence took place between November 2003 and May 2005 in Surrey or Richmond, B.C.
Smith, who did not speak during his appearance, sat in the prisoner's box wearing a navy blue leisure outfit. He stared straight ahead and didn't glance out into the public gallery, which was crowded with sports and news reporters.
Crown prosecutor Maurizio D'Attilo took about 30 minutes to outline the case against Smith and a publication ban was imposed on the details. Vancouver lawyer Bill Smart represented Smith in court.
Paul Harasen, Smith's Regina lawyer, told a crowd of reporters outside court that his client is "doing quite well. He's a very strong, intelligent person."
The lawyer described the bail conditions as fair and said he would not characterize them as unusual. He said he wasn't in a position to comment on Smith's future career.
Police urged anyone who may have had sexual contact with Smith to get tested for possible exposure to the virus, and to contact the RCMP in connection with the investigation.
Roughriders' general manager Roy Shivers commented on the case for the first time Wednesday. His comments came from a video on the team's website.
"My first reaction was I felt a sense of sympathy for the victims, not only the young ladies, but Trevis and his family also," said Shivers. "Trevis is a victim too. Somebody had to give it (HIV) to him."
